Programme Overview & Rationale
The International Languages for Diplomacy and Global Engagement Programme develops profession-oriented language competencies required for diplomacy, international relations, global commerce, multilateral negotiations, development cooperation and cross-cultural engagement. In an increasingly interconnected world, language proficiency has become an essential strategic asset for diplomats, public officials, international civil servants, business executives and development professionals seeking to engage effectively across cultures and linguistic boundaries.
Unlike conventional language programmes that focus primarily on grammar and conversational ability, this programme integrates language acquisition with diplomatic practice, international protocol, negotiation, public communication and professional writing. Participants develop practical language skills applicable to government, diplomatic missions, international organisations, regional institutions, multinational corporations and development agencies.
The programme consists of eight (8) specialised language streams:
1. English for Diplomacy and Global Engagement
2. French for Diplomacy and International Cooperation
3. Spanish for International Relations
4. Portuguese for Lusophone Diplomacy and Trade
5. Mandarin Chinese for Global Economic Engagement
6. Arabic for Diplomatic and Regional Affairs
7. Russian for Eurasian Diplomacy and Strategic Engagement
8. Japanese for Diplomacy, International Business and Strategic Cooperation
Each language stream develops participants from foundational communication to advanced professional proficiency through progressive instruction in listening, speaking, reading and writing, while incorporating diplomatic protocol, international negotiations, official correspondence, public speaking and intercultural communication.
Practical learning is delivered through language laboratories, diplomatic simulations, negotiation exercises, speech delivery, professional writing assignments and intercultural engagement activities.
Within the Strategic Communication and Public Diplomacy (SCPD) Framework, the programme prepares participants to communicate confidently in multilingual diplomatic, governmental, commercial and international development environments while strengthening Zambia's engagement within regional and global institutions.
