For many years, this question informed the advisory, research and policy work undertaken through Vwaali Consultancy (VwC). Working with Government institutions, development partners, private sector organisations and civil society, the Consultancy increasingly recognised that many of Zambia's development opportunities—and challenges—intersected around three inseparable pillars: peace, economic development and diplomacy.
As this work expanded, so too did the conviction that these issues required more than consultancy services. They demanded an independent institution dedicated to generating knowledge, building professional capacity, convening stakeholders and informing public policy in the long term.
The vision therefore evolved beyond project-based advisory work into the establishment of a permanent, public-interest platform.
This transition culminated in the creation of the Institute of Peace Economy Studies Zambia (IPES Zambia)—an independent, non-profit and non-partisan institute of studies established as a company limited by guarantee under the laws of the Republic of Zambia.
Today, IPES Zambia serves as a national platform for research, professional training, policy advisory, strategic dialogue and public diplomacy, bringing together Government, academia, development partners, the private sector and citizens to explore how peace can drive sustainable economic transformation.
The Institute's work extends beyond traditional peace studies. It promotes the emerging field of peace economy—the understanding that peace, democratic stability and constructive international relations are strategic economic assets capable of attracting investment, stimulating tourism, strengthening institutions and creating opportunities for inclusive development.
The International Peace Marathon Zambia represents one of the Institute's flagship initiatives. Conceived during the institutional transition, the Marathon symbolises the practical application of peace economy by bringing together sport, diplomacy, youth participation and national branding within a single platform. More importantly, it supports the long-term operationalisation of IPES Zambia as a public-interest centre of excellence dedicated to research, policy dialogue and capacity development.
The evolution from Vwaali Consultancy to IPES Zambia therefore reflects more than organisational growth. It represents the transition from private professional practice to a lasting national institution committed to serving the public interest.
Today, IPES Zambia continues to build on that foundation—working with national, regional and international partners to position Zambia as a recognised centre for peace economy, sports diplomacy, economic diplomacy and strategic cooperation.
